We are most interested in one kind of message: a figure on this site you think is wrong. Every number here is traceable to a record with a source and a date, so a specific challenge — which page, which figure, what you found — can be checked quickly. When one holds, it goes in the corrections log, which has 3 entries so far.

For journalists and researchers

Every figure on this site can be traced to a record with a source and the date it was read, and the formulas are published on the methodology page. If you are checking a number for a story, ask and we will send the working — the inputs, the sources and the calculation — rather than a quote. We would rather explain a figure than see it reported wrongly.

Useful context before you write: how the numbers are made, what we have got wrong, and a dated survey of what other calculators state, which includes our own errors.

What we cannot help with

We do not sell solar, install it, or pass your details to anyone who does. We cannot quote you, recommend an installer, or advise on your tax position — the figures here are a screening estimate from published data, not a quote and not tax advice. For a real number on your own roof you need quotes from installers; the calculator is for checking whether one looks sensible.
